Central Air Conditioners

Fitting individual units like window air conditioners in each room of a big building can get super expensive. Having a central air conditioning system is the more practical choice when it comes to applications like this.

This system takes cool air and circulates it through a system of supply ducts and return registers. These supply ducts and registers can be found in many locations: walls, floors, and ceilings. As the system carries cool air through the home, it becomes warmer as it travels through the system. The air then circulates back to the central air conditioner through the return ducts and registers.

Central Air Conditioners are about 30 percent cheaper to install, but if you don’t have existing ductwork or your ductwork needs replacement, this can double the cost of installation. This type of unit of AC needs regular maintenance and any repair on your ductwork can be costly.

A benefit of a central air conditioner is that it helps dehumidify the incoming air. But with extreme humidity, you may have to invest in a dehumidifier to help lower the moisture in the air.

Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners

This system is called a split system because it is made up of two units: one indoor and one outdoor. The former houses the evaporator and cooling fan. The latter, meanwhile, houses the compressor, expansion valve, and condenser.

This unit is a great option for cooling your home or business without having to deal with the ductwork. Other systems require ductwork so that the cool air can travel throughout the space but a ductless mini-split air conditioner doesn’t require ductwork. Similar to our conventional split system, which has components on the interior and exterior, the ductless mini-split system would have a condensing unit or heat pump on the outside connected by a line duct into an air handler that would get installed inside.

This has become outstanding for new homes or home additions without ductwork. So, while the installation is more expensive upfront, you’ll end saving money over the life of your unit. It is becoming more and more attractive as of today.

You can control the temperature of a whole home or just one room, by controlling the air handlers in each specific area. This allows for a more efficient way to control the temperature and cost of operating the ductless mini-split air conditioner.

Multi-zoned or Multi-split AC

This type of unit is much more efficient compared to Central AC and Single-zone mini-split AC. This will replace any noisy outdoor unit with a super silent multi-zoned condenser, which will supply heating and cooling to each room independently. This means that if only one of the rooms is being used, they won’t have to waste energy cooling or heating unoccupied space. This alone can save a lot of energy use. And when they do have a full house, each of the room’s occupants will have the freedom to choose the desired temperature of their own room or zone.

It is also worth mentioning that these temperatures will be maintained far more accurately with a mini-split system since each indoor unit has its own temperature sensor. It adjusts its output based on the temperature of the room rather than the hallway.

Heat Pumps

These pumps pull the heat from or put the heat back into the earth to cool and heat your home. A heat pump is a type of split system that utilizes the function of both heating and cooling. There are two types available:

  1. Air source heat pumps – pulls the heat from the outdoors
  2. Geothermal heat pumps or ground source heat pumps – pull the heat from indoor
 

Window Air Conditioners

The very commonly used system for single rooms. In this air conditioner, a single box houses all the components, namely the condenser, evaporator, compressor, cooling coil, and expansion valve.

A window air conditioner unit is fitted in a window sill or slot in the room’s wall that is specially made for it.

Portable Air Conditioners

This is a variation of the unitary conditioning system. This type has a mobile air conditioning system placed on the floor inside a room.

It discharges exhaust heat through the exterior wall by means of a hose vent. While this type of AC is noisier.

Evaporative Cooler

An evaporative cooler or swamp cooler is used to cool air in a warm climate with low humidity through the evaporation of water. The principle is to cool outdoor air by passing it over water-saturated pads, causing the water to evaporate into it. The 15°- to 40°F- cooler air is then directed into the home and pushes warmer air out through windows

When operating this unit, windows must be slightly open in order for warm air to escape and is replaced by cooler air. This also costs half of the installation price to central air conditioners and about a quarter of energy only can be used.

Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC)

To understand what a PTAC unit is, one must first understand the term PTAC. PTAC is used in the HVAC industry to describe Package terminal air conditioner. It is referred to as packaged because the unit is self-contained with the evaporator and condenser within one box. PTAC units are commercial grade unit system that go through and are installed just above the floor inside the room. There are many different sizes of PTAC units to fit in most spaces and to allow proper retrofitting. Most PTAC units are designed to efficiently provide heating and cooling for a single room or living space.
